Antique Edwardian necklace, featuring large faceted Rock Crystal beads strung into a graduated long necklace.
Rock Crystal or ice crystal was considered to be a special type of transparent white quartz crystal. The name was given to this crystal by the Ancient Greeks and derives from the word 'krystallos' meaning frozen water that would never thaw. Rock Crystal was thought to harness the sun's power and have healing properties. Consequently it was used by many civilisations such as the Ancient Greeks, Romans and Aztecs and set into spiritual and religious items. Rock Crystal became fashionable in the Victorian and Edwardian era and was facetted, carved and set into many designs of jewellery.
